Son, Yamaguchi Top-Seeded for Worlds

Son Wan Ho and Akane Yamaguchi are the singles top seeds for the TOTAL BWF World Championships 2017 in Glasgow.

The seeding list is based on the World Rankings of Thursday 3 August 2017. In the paired events, China’s Li Junhui/Liu Yuchen, Japan’s Misaki Matsutomo/Ayaka Takahashi and China’s Zheng Siwei/Chen Qingchen head the draws in Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles respectively. There are 16 seeds in each of the five categories.

Korea’s Son is placed at the head of an elite list in Men’s Singles, over Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei, Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen, and China’s Shi Yuqi and defending champion Chen Long, among others. Five-time champion Lin Dan (China) is seeded seventh.

Three Indians – Kidambi Srikanth, Ajay Jayaram and Sai Praneeth – have been seeded at No.8, No.13 and No.15 respectively.

Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi (featured image), Women’s Singles runner-up at the CROWN GROUP Australian Open, finds herself above Korea’s Sung Ji Hyun, Spain’s Carolina Marin (defending champion), India’s Pusarla V Sindhu, and China’s Sun Yu and He Bingjiao.

Former champion Ratchanok Intanon (Thailand) is seeded No.8, just ahead of World Junior champion Chen Yufei (China).

Four Japanese – Yamaguchi, Nozomi Okuhara, Sayaka Sato and Aya Ohori – are seeded at No.1, No.7, No.10 and No.11 respectively.

Men’s Doubles:

The top four seeds in Men’s Doubles have all won Superseries this season. Chinese young guns and BCA Indonesia Open winners Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen are at the top of the seedings, just ahead of Danish veterans and OUE Singapore Open champions Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen. At No.3 are Indonesia’s Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo – winners of three straight Superseries at the start of this season – and Australian Open champions Takeshi Kamura/Keigo Sonoda (Japan).

Four Chinese pairs are seeded – apart from Li/Liu, Chai Biao/Hong Wei, Zhang Nan/Liu Cheng and Wang Yilyu/Huang Kaixiang are also among the top 16.

Olympic silver medallists Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong (Malaysia) and Olympic bronze medallists Chris Langridge/Marcus Ellis (England) are seeded No.5 and No.14 respectively.

Women’s Doubles:

Australian Open winners Matsutomo and Takahashi are top-seeded in Women’s Doubles, ahead of the pair they beat in the Olympic final – Denmark’s Christinna Pedersen/Kamilla Rytter Juhl.

All England champions Chang Ye Na/Lee So Hee (Korea, No.3); Chen Qingchen/Jia Yifan (China, No.4); Jung Kyung Eun/Shin Seung Chan (Korea, No.5); Huang Dongping/Li Yinhui (China, No.6) and Yonex-Sunrise India Open champions Shiho Tanaka/Koharu Yonemoto (Japan, No.7) also feature among the prominent seeds.

China, Japan and Korea dominate in this category, with four seedings each.

Mixed Doubles:

China’s Zheng Siwei/Chen Qingchen and Lu Kai/Huang Yaqiong, the two most dominant Mixed Doubles pairs this season, have been rewarded with the No.1 and No.2 seeding respectively. Indonesia Open champions Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir (Indonesia, No.3); China’s Zhang Nan/Li Yinhui (No.4); England’s Chris Adcock/Gabrielle Adcock (No.5) and Denmark’s Joachim Fischer Nielsen/Christinna Pedersen (No.6) have also received high seedings.

The TOTAL BWF World Championships will be held in Emirates Arena, Glasgow, from 21 to 27 August 2017.
